What Is A Membership Site?

Many people are looking to make a steady, consistent income on the Internet.  While there are many ways to go about doing that, one of the most popular and effective ways to do this is via having your own membership site(s).

What exactly is a membership site?  A membership site is a site that contains important information on a specific topic or niche that will appeal to your target market.  You usually restrict access to customers who pay a recurring fee (usually monthly or annually), though there are some membership sites that don’t require any fee, but just a submission of one’s name and email address.

Either way, you want to restrict access to the membership site to those who paid and/or provided their contact information to you because the information you provide should be more informative than just information you can find on any web page or in any free ebook.

This is the main reason why membership sites are profitable - they provide residual income to you, especially if your membership site is a “pay-to-access” site (i.e. members of that site have to pay a recurring fee to continuously access the site), though free membership sites can also provide recurring income if they join your opt-in list and you are able to sell to them over and over again.

Most experienced Internet marketers know that the key to significant online profits is to get paid over and over again for work you do just once.  Membership sites fit this criteria for the most part; while you do have to keep updating the website with new information about your topic or niche, the membership site can continue to endure for years as long as the software you use to create the membership site and take the recurring payments is solid and reliable.  You don’t have to continuously create membership sites in order to make a recurring income from those members who wish to continue being members of that membership site.

Maybe they don’t want to buy the current special, but want to sign up to your newsletter. Don’t forget to include that option in your list of check boxes. Maybe your customers can’t make up their minds and get to the order form to see your cross sell and up sell opportunities. These types of people need a little more guidance and you will want to offer them a comparison of your products with a list of benefits to help them make their decision. You can offer various formats and complexities of the same product to help motivate them to cross that barrier from visitor to buyer.

The resistance to buy is the biggest hurdle for an online marketer. It is easier to sell things after a decision to buy has been made. However, that doesn’t mean you should pay attention to how your sales opportunities are presented at the time of an order to help you convert non-buyers into fans.

If it is something that complements or enhances the original product, it makes perfect sense to include it within the content of your original product. In that sense, it can come off as a helpful gesture, rather than very clever marketing.

You can still use the thank you page to alert your customer to other offers in your line up and cultivate a potential sale in the future, if not immediately.
